🚂 WEEKEND FIND

All Aboard for the Long Way Around
There is something wonderfully old-fashioned about taking a train simply because the journey is worth taking.
No one is waiting for you at the other end. There's no list of stops to squeeze into the afternoon. You find your seat, watch the world change outside the window, and let someone else worry about getting you there.
That's the appeal of the Conway Scenic Railroad in North Conway, New Hampshire.
And in October, the ride becomes part of the adventure.
THE SCENIC ROUTE IS THE WHOLE POINT

The railroad's Mountaineer excursion follows the historic Mountain Division line into Crawford Notch, where the White Mountains rise around the tracks.
Along the way, the train follows the rocky Saco River, passes steep mountain walls and crosses dramatic bridges, including Frankenstein Trestle and Willey Brook Bridge.
It's a four-to-four-and-a-half-hour round trip, so you have time to settle in and watch the scenery unfold instead of hopping out of the car every few miles to find another viewpoint.
You can even choose an observation dome seat for a view through the glass roof.
HERE'S YOUR PERMISSION TO DO NOTHING

I know, sitting on a train might not sound like a wellness activity.
But consider how rarely we get to travel without navigating, driving, checking directions or deciding what comes next.
On this trip, the mountains provide the entertainment.
Watch the river appear between the trees. Notice the way the landscape changes as the train moves deeper into the notch. Bring a thermos for before you board, or save a favorite playlist for the drive home.
You don't need to turn the ride into a mindfulness exercise. You can simply enjoy it.
Sometimes the best part of a getaway is having something beautiful to look at without having to do anything about it.
MAKE A WEEKEND OF IT

The train departs from the historic station in North Conway Village, so you can build the rest of your weekend around the town.
Stay at the Kearsarge Inn, a boutique-style inn within walking distance of the village's shops and restaurants.
Spend the evening over a relaxed dinner, then head out in the morning for a walk or an easy hike before driving home.
Keep the plans loose. The train is the main event.
One thing to know: The Mountaineer is the longer, more dramatic route. Conway Scenic also operates a shorter Valley Train if you'd rather have a quick heritage-rail experience. Check the official schedule before booking because departure dates vary by season.
🚂 YOUR WEEKEND FIND
Maybe you don't need a weekend packed with activities.
Maybe you need a window seat, a mountain view and a few hours when the only thing on your agenda is watching the world go by.
I'd call that a pretty good way to spend a fall day.
