Steal One Weekend Before the Holidays

Here's my case for disappearing in October.

Not because you need another vacation.

Because October might be the last month of the year that still feels like yours.

Summer is over.

The holidays haven't started yet.

The weather is asking you to go outside.

And the trees are giving you a pretty good excuse to leave town.

So take a weekend.

🍁 DON'T WAIT UNTIL YOU NEED IT

I think we have a bad habit of waiting until we're completely exhausted before we decide we need a break.

By then, the break doesn't feel like a luxury.

It feels necessary.

What if we went before that?

Pick a weekend in October.

Book somewhere surrounded by trees.

Pack a sweater.

Bring the book you've been meaning to read.

And leave a few hours completely unplanned.

🌲 MAKE YOUR RESET A LITTLE UNUSUAL

This doesn't have to mean checking into a traditional spa.

Try something you've never done.

Take a forest-bathing walk.

Go horseback riding through the woods.

Rent a canoe and paddle across a quiet lake.

Find a farm that offers a seasonal dinner.

Take a pottery class.

Book a sauna.

Walk somewhere you've never walked before.

Then come back to your room, take a hot shower and do absolutely nothing.

That's the part I think we forget.

You don't have to fill the weekend just because you traveled somewhere.

🔥 ONE PLACE I'D PUT ON YOUR RADAR

Himalayan Institute “Image Courtesy of Himalayan Institute in Pennsylvania”

For a more structured version of this kind of escape, Restore in the Wild at the Himalayan Institute in Pennsylvania takes place October 23–25.

The weekend combines restorative yoga, sound healing, guided nature walks, nourishing meals and time to slow down in a wooded setting.

It's essentially the idea behind this entire story:

Go somewhere beautiful. Move your body. Spend time outside. Then stop.

You don't necessarily need to book the retreat.

You can steal the formula.

🍂 YOUR OCTOBER RESET

Friday: Get out of town before dinner. Find somewhere beautiful to watch the sun go down.

Saturday: Start outside. Do one thing that gets you moving. Then have a long lunch and leave the afternoon open.

Saturday night: Find a restaurant you've never tried. Come back early. Make tea. Read.

Sunday: Take one last walk before you go home.

No racing around.

No twelve-stop itinerary.

No pressure to “make the most” of the weekend.

Just enough adventure to feel like you went somewhere and enough quiet to feel like you actually rested.

THE PART I LOVE MOST

There will always be another weekend.

Another trip.

Another season.

Another reason to wait.

But October has a very small window where the weather is still inviting you outside, the trees are changing and the holiday frenzy hasn't arrived yet.

Take advantage of it.

Steal one weekend.

Your December self might thank you.

Until Monday's next Weekend Find,

Wander & Reset
