The Best Part of Every Trip Is Free

I've been thinking about something lately.
Whenever I come home from a trip, the memories I tell people about are almost never the ones I planned.
It's rarely the museum.
It's rarely the expensive dinner.
It's not even the hotel.
It's always something much smaller.
And then it hit me.
My favorite part of every trip usually happens within the first hour.
Before I've unpacked.
Before I've checked into every attraction.
Before I've looked at a map.
It's the first walk.
No destination.
No schedule.
Just curiosity.
I honestly think it's the happiest walk we ever take.
The First Walk

Every trip begins the same way.
You arrive.
You drop your bags.
You step outside.
And suddenly everything feels interesting.
The bakery on the corner.
The sound of a language you don't hear every day.
Someone riding a bicycle with flowers in the basket.
An old man reading a newspaper outside a café.
A dog sleeping in the middle of a quiet square.
None of these things are famous.
But somehow they're the moments that stay with us.
One Place That Makes You Want to Wander

If I could choose one place to take that first walk, it might be Old San Juan.
Not because there's a checklist of things to see.
Because every street invites you to slow down.
Brightly painted buildings catch your eye.
Blue cobblestone streets wind toward the sea.
Music drifts through open windows.
Locals greet one another like they've known each other forever.
It's the kind of place where getting a little lost feels like the entire point.
I Think We've Been Doing Vacations Backwards
Somewhere along the way, we've convinced ourselves that a great trip has to be packed with plans.
Book the tour.
Reserve the restaurant.
See the landmark.
Move on to the next thing.
But I wonder if we're rushing past the very moments we'll remember most.
The conversations we didn't expect.
The tiny bakery we almost walked by.
The street musician who made us stop for five minutes.
The hidden courtyard we found simply because we turned left instead of right.
Those moments don't appear on an itinerary.
They appear when we leave space for them.
Maybe That's What Wellness Really Looks Like

For me, wellness isn't always about massages or spa days.
Sometimes it's something much simpler.
Walking without checking the time.
Looking up instead of down.
Feeling curious again.
Remembering what it feels like to explore without needing to accomplish anything.
I think that's why I love that first walk so much.
For a little while, nothing is expected of us.
We're just there.
And somehow, that's enough.
Before You Plan Your Next Trip...

When you arrive...
Don't unpack right away.
Don't start checking things off your list.
Take a walk.
Leave your phone in your pocket.
Notice the little things.
They may end up becoming the biggest memories you bring home.
