If someone handed you a handful of volcanic rock and said, "Grow a vineyard here," what would you do?

Most of us would probably laugh.

The people of Pico Island did something different.

They picked up another stone.

And another.

Over generations, they built thousands of hand-crafted lava walls across one of the most unforgiving landscapes imaginable.

Today, those walls protect one of the most extraordinary vineyards in the world.
