🌿 Weekend Find

The Garden With a Library Hidden Inside It

I have a soft spot for places that make you wonder why you didn't know about them sooner.

Especially when they combine two things that don't seem like they should belong together.

A beautiful garden.

And a library.

That's what caught my attention about Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library in Delaware's Brandywine Valley.

At first, I thought, beautiful garden, lovely afternoon.

Then I discovered there's an entire library tucked into the experience too.

And suddenly I wanted to know more.

Come for the Garden. Stay for the Wandering.

Winterthur sits on a sprawling estate with a 60-acre naturalistic garden, surrounded by nearly 1,000 acres of rolling hills, meadows and woodlands.

There are miles of paths and trails, so this isn't the kind of garden where you walk around for 20 minutes, take a few pictures and leave.

You can actually wander.

And I think that's part of the appeal.

There is no pressure to see everything.

You can follow a path simply because it looks interesting.

Stop when something catches your eye.

Sit for a while.

Keep walking.

Sometimes that is exactly what I want from a weekend.

And Then There's the Library

This is the part that really got me.

Winterthur's library isn't just a pretty reading room.

It is a research library filled with rare books, manuscripts, photographs, artwork, archives and other pieces of American cultural history.

And here's something I love about it:

You don't have to be a scholar to appreciate it.

The library welcomes the public for general browsing.

So you could spend part of the day surrounded by trees and flowers, then find yourself looking through a collection of centuries-old books and stories.

It's an unusual combination.

And honestly, that's why I like it.

Maybe This Is My Kind of Wellness

I don't always want wellness to look like a spa appointment.

Sometimes I want a day where I walk until my thoughts get quieter.

Then I find somewhere to sit and read.

No notifications.

No schedule.

No feeling that I should be accomplishing something.

Just a garden, a book and an afternoon that doesn't need to be rushed.

Winterthur feels like it was made for exactly that kind of day.

The Unexpected Part

What I love most about Winterthur is that it doesn't fit neatly into one category.

You might arrive thinking you're spending the day in a garden, only to discover that you've wandered into a piece of American history. Then you learn there's a library here too, filled with books, photographs, manuscripts and collections that tell stories about how people actually lived.

It keeps changing on you.

And I think that's what makes it memorable.

You're never quite sure what you'll find around the next corner, which makes the experience feel less like visiting an attraction and more like discovering a place for yourself.

One More Thing Before You Go 🌿

If you enjoy these little discoveries, Thursday is when I bring you the bigger story.

Monday is for finding something unexpected.

Thursday is for getting a little more lost.

Until next adventure,
