I'll admit it.

The first time I heard about a seaweed bath, I wasn't immediately thinking luxurious wellness experience.

I was thinking...

Seaweed? In a bathtub?

But then I started looking into it.

And somehow, this strange little tradition became one of the most intriguing wellness experiences I've come across.

Because in one seaside village on Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way, the ocean doesn't just sit outside the window.

They bring it into the bath.

Strandhill is a small coastal village in County Sligo, sitting beneath Knocknarea mountain and facing the Atlantic.

It's known for surfing, dramatic coastline and a very Irish kind of scenery that makes you want to stay outside longer than you planned.

But tucked into the village is something much more unusual.

VOYA Seaweed Baths.

The bathhouse was opened in 2000 by the Walton family, reviving an Irish seaweed bathing tradition that had once been common along the country's coast. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were hundreds of seaweed bathhouses around Ireland.

Today, VOYA continues the tradition with fresh seawater and wild, organic seaweed harvested from the surrounding coast.

This is my favorite part.

You aren't sitting in a bathtub sprinkled with a few decorative pieces of seaweed.

The bath is filled with hot seawater and armfuls of seaweed.

As the water heats everything up, the seaweed releases its natural compounds into the bath.

And then...

You soak.

That's the experience.

No complicated wellness technology.

No futuristic recovery chamber.

Just warm seawater, seaweed and an old coastal tradition that somehow survived long enough to become today's very unusual spa experience.

We spend a lot of money looking for the newest wellness trend.

The newest treatment.

The newest recovery technology.

The newest thing someone has decided we absolutely need.

Meanwhile, Ireland has been looking toward the sea for generations.

That makes me wonder if some of the most interesting wellness experiences aren't actually new at all.

Maybe we've just forgotten about them.

VOYA sits right in Strandhill, surrounded by the Atlantic coastline and beneath Knocknarea.

After your bath, you can explore the village, walk along the coast or simply find somewhere to eat and watch the Atlantic do its thing.

And that's what makes this feel like a true Wander & Reset find to me.

It's not a resort bubble.

It's a very specific experience that belongs to the place you're visiting.

You couldn't pick this up and drop it into a generic hotel in another city.

It belongs to Sligo.

It smells like the sea.

And it comes with a story.

Absolutely.

Mostly because I want to know what it feels like.

And because I'm always drawn to travel experiences that make me ask:

"Why don't we do this everywhere?"

A seaweed bath may not be everyone's idea of a spa day.

But that's exactly why it caught my attention.

Sometimes the best travel finds are the ones that sound slightly strange until you realize...

you actually want to try them.
